14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas(PBD) Conference 2016 is to be held at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, Jose Rizal Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110021 from 08th – 10th January, 2016. The PBD Conference 2016 is being planned differently with an objective for developing a new paradigm for engagement with the Diaspora over the next decade.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) was observed on 9 January 2016.

 

About Pravasi Bharatiya Divas;

  • PBD is celebrated in India on 9 January each year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.

  • The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Bombay on 9 January 1915.

  • Established in 2003, it is sponsored by theMinistry of Overseas Indian Affairs of the government of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) and the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region of India.

 

Paul Kaba Thieba was named as Prime Minister of Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso's president named economist Paul Kaba Thieba as prime minister on Thursday.

Burkina Faso is a country in West Africa and its size is around 274,200 square kilometres (105,900 sq mi). Its capital is Ouagadougou.

 

Motorola Mobility now belongs to Lenovo.

Lenovo had purchased Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion. The deal was first announced in January.
After combining Lenovo and Motorola handset sales, the new company appears poised to become the third-largest smartphone maker by number of units shipped,bypassing Lenovo’s Chinese rival Xiaomi.

Motorola Mobility is a division of Lenovo Group that develops mobile devices. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
The company was formed on January 4, 2011 by the split of Motorola Inc. into two separate companies; Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions.
 
Hindi writer Ravindra Kalia passes away..
Noted Hindi writer and journalist Ravindra Kalia passed away at a private hospital here today. He was 78. Kalia had been suffering from liver cirrhosis.
 
He was known for his works like Ghalib Chutti Sharab and Nau Saal Chotti Patni. He had served as Director of Bharatiya Jnanpith.

  • Ravindra Kalia was born on November 11, 1938 in Jalandhar, Punjab.
  • Awards and Honours: Uttar Pradesh (UP) Premchand Memorail Award, Pdumlal Bakshi Award of Madhya Pradesh Government, UP Sahitya Bhushan Award, UP Lohia Award, Punjab Government’s Shiromani award.
 
Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland won the Chennai open  title 

World No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland has won the 2016 Chennai Open title of tennis. In the summit clash at Nungambakkam tennis stadium in Chennai, he defeated the Borna Coric (World No. 33) of Croatia by 6-3, 7-5 score.

This was his third consecutive ATP Chennai Open title for Wawrinka (won in 2014, 2015 and 2016) and overall fourth, first won it in 2011. With this win, Wawrinka pocketed US $ 75,700 and won 250 ranking points.
